Millennium Nucleus leads an international meeting about physics of active matter in Viña del Mar

Over 40 scientists all over the world will be gathered in Viña del Mar, Chile to participate in the satellite meeting of the Statistical Physics International Conference (Statphys 2019). An instance in which they will discuss the last advances in active matter.
This physics area has become the paradigm of a new kind of systems out of equilibrium like flocks of birds, hives of insects, bacteria and synthetic particles, that shows a great number of new phenomena that require new focuses and whose study promise to revolutionize several areas that go from biology up to the development of intelligent and reconfigurable materials.
The event was organized by the Millennium Nucleus Physics of Active Matter of the Physics and Mathematics Sciences Faculty of the University of Chile, a center that counted with the support of an international scientific committee constituted by experts from California (Santa Bárbara), Johannes Gutenberg, Sorbonne, Northwestern Universities and Chuepe Labs Inc.
Rodrigo Soto, Director of the Millennium Nucleus said this meeting will be focused on the general aspects of physics of the active matter, with an emphasis on the living being’s statistical mechanics and its applications for biology and synthetic active materials. “The aim is to have a thematic meeting about a specific area of statistical physics, which is the active matter and create collaboration networks among researchers and students from the Nucleus with researchers from other countries. The active matter is a very important area in which many people from many countries showed interest to participate”, said.
Between July 15th – 17th, six researchers from the Universities of Pittsburgh, Lyon, Bristol, Edinburgh, Oxford and California (San Diego) will be giving lectures while another eighteen will be performing presentations about their investigations.
In the meeting, the Millennium Nucleus participated with a lecture in charge of Francisca Guzmán, Associated Researcher of the Center. Also, many students of the Nucleus presented posters along with the rest of Latin America and other countries students.
The Millennial Nucleus Physics of Active Matter, pioneers in Chile, was born in 2007 and financed by the Millennium Initiative of the Economy Ministry. To date, it counts with 16 researchers, 12 Ph.D., Master’s Program and Graduate students, 2 laboratories, cutting-edge equipment and, 17 publications. Among its investigations stand out the design of microrobots, bacteria-propelled motors, biological tissue modeling, bacteria within confined environments and the development of a thermodynamic theory for the active matter.
